After publishing our opinion writing pieces, we presented them to each other in class. This writing piece required the students to form an opinion about what they believed our school mascot should be using solid reasons and examples. While drafting, we followed the O.R.E.O writing method, which requires the students to state their opinion, provide a reason, and at least 3 examples to support their reason. They then reiterated their opinion again. They put together a 5 paragraph essay with an introduction, three paragraphs to present their 3 reasons, and a closing paragraph. The students shared their writing with the class and then voted for who they believed was the most convincing and who had the most solid examples. It was a tough choice since ALL of the students did such a fantastic job! The award went to Ayden Walper!
In math, we have been learning about factors and multiples. To review listing factors, our class had a factor snowball fight. Each student was assigned a product. Their job was to find all of the factors for their product.
We have been exploring space with our LEAD21 Unit. While reading through our differentiated readers, we took a couple of minutes to try some astronaut food. On this day's menu, we snacked on cinnamon apples!
Last week, we practiced our close reading skills by exploring the traditions Germany has to celebrate Christmas. The students have had a great time traveling around the world exploring different countries and their cultures in relation to the holiday season. While reading about Germany, we learned that the Christmas tree (or tannenbaum) originated in Germany, so it was only fitting that our STEAM activity had to do with that. The students had to collaborate to build the tallest Christmas tree they could using only toothpicks and a box of gumdrops. This required a great deal of following directions, working together, and problem solving. Check out our building skills!
We have been working on text dependent analysis while exploring holidays around the world. Our first stop was Australia. We learned how Australia's season is summer during Christmas which effects the way they celebrate Christmas. To end our lesson, we completed a STEAM activity which involved creating a ship that could hold as many people as possible, since many Australians celebrate Christmas with beach trips and BBQs.
Since we filled our Behavior BINGO chart, we voted on our reward. The reward the students picked was a movie and popcorn morning. We had a great time eating popcorn and watching Toy Story 3. Check out our pictures from our fun morning!
